MISS JUNIOR TEEN AMERICA 2016
My name is Erin Szuba and I’m beyond excited to be your Miss Jr. Teen America 2016! I look forward to my year ahead and I can’t wait for what’s in store! I am 15 years old and a high school sophomore. I enjoy taking part in my school activities, including Beta Club, Student Government, Jr. Civitan Club, and the girls’ varsity golf team. When I graduate high school, I plan to attend the University of Alabama to major in interior design and minor in photography. Photography, especially, has always been one of my passions and strengths. Outside of school, I have a wide variety of hobbies. Besides photography, I have an interest in art, and I love country music. I also enjoy kayaking, hiking, fishing, swimming, and just about anything else you can do outside. I’d also call myself and adventure seeker; I love a good adrenaline rush! From jumping off bridges into creeks and mountain streams, to going on crazy rides. I even plan on going skydiving for my eighteenth birthday! As Miss Jr. Teen America 2016, I am driven to promote my platform, Rett Syndrome and “Team Blake”. This cause is so important to me to raise awareness of, being a disorder that not many people know about. I had never even heard about it until this past February, when I was introduced to 5 year-old Blakely Goodman. who is living with Rett Syndrome. This is a genetic disorder affecting 1 in 10,000 girls. These girls are born completely healthy and normal. Symptoms usually start to show between 6 – 15 months of age. They end up losing control of their bodies, unable to use their arms, hands, legs, and also the ability to speak. These girls are extremely smart, but they just can’t tell you. Blakely communicated with me on her computer, called a “Tobi”, which uses eye recognition to speak for her. Rett Syndrome is a terrible disorder. But the good news is that scientists have been able to reverse the symptoms of Rett in mice. So a cure in humans is really possible! My goal is to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure. Please visit “Join Team Blake” on Facebook to find out about Blakely and her family, and click to watch the video, “Blakely’s Story”. It’s sure to touch your heart as it has mine.
