Catherine Kirkland

Hello, thank you for visiting the Miss Teen America website. I am Miss Teen America 2014, Catherine Kirkland. I was thrilled to win this title in Virginia Beach, Virginia at the beautiful Sandler Center for the Arts on August 2nd 2014.

The entire week of the Miss Teen America Pageant seemed like a dream. The Miss Teen America Directors and staff made each of us feel like celebrities. We had autograph signings and trips around the Virginia Beach area. We worked as a group on a very worthwhile community service project for Ben’s Bells and of course we made new friends from around the country. I would encourage any young lady between the ages of 12 to 19 to come and compete for the Miss Jr. Teen or Miss Teen America titles. You are sure to make new friends and lifelong memories!

I began competing in pageants at the age of twelve. My first pageant was a cancer fundraiser at my middle school; having just lost my Grandmother “GG” to cancer it seemed like a fitting tribute. I quickly realized that pageants and community service go “hand in hand”. Can you do community service without a crown on your head? Of course you can however there is something about that sparkly hat which make people want to stop and hear what you have to say. I have found that when you hold a pageant title people seek you out to help with various community service functions and I am always happy to be a part of them.

My platform and my passion is “Ending Hunger, especially among children." Food insufficiency is much more common than most people realize. I live in what most would consider a fairly affluent area, yet even among my school classmates there is food insecurity within five percent of the households. I have found that people are more than willing to help once a need has been recognized, so I hope to continue to spread the word and work to support our food banks and shelters.

The primary focus of my year as Miss Teen America 2014 will be service in my community, my state and across the nation. When I’m not representing the Miss Teen America pageant I will simply be a high school junior who has the honor of being a choreographer and dance captain of my school’s show choir and also the producer and director of our Broadcast journalism department’s news show. I have been a cheerleader for three years and served as captain of my middle school cheer squad when we won our state championship title for the second year in a row. I love my high school classes, especially English IV and German V. I will graduate high school with high school majors in Language, Fine art and Broadcast Journalism. I hope to study Broadcast journalism in college and pursue a career in front of the camera.

Follow my journey this year on the Miss Teen America website, my Facebook Fan page: Miss Teen America 2014, Catherine Kirkland or on Instagram @missteenamerica2014; better yet sign up for next year’s pageant and begin a fascinating journey of you own!

I am your Miss Teen America 2014,
Catherine Kirkland
